The interpretive signs describe how the alternate shale and sandstone layers, visible in the near distance, were deposited in geologic time.
Moisture, falling as rain and snow, seeps down through the porous sandstone layers until it reaches an impermeable shale layer. Flowing sideways, the water seeps out as a useable spring. The seeping water also plays a role in the formation of the alcoves where the cliff dwellings are located. Besides the rock layers, the overlook gives good views to the north.
The nearby LaPlata and San Miguel Ranges of the San Juan Mountains sparkle on the horizon.
